Natural baryte (barium sulphate, chemical formula BaSO4) can be characterised by:
- High inertness in various media
- High density and, as a result, low oil absorption
- Medium Mohs hardness of 3
- Easy wetting
- Easy to disperse.
(also compared to precipitated barium sulphate)
Natural barium sulphate comes without any residual salts when compared to precipitated grades. In addition, natural barytes are easier to disperse than precipitated grades.

Production locations Portaryte
Portaryte is the brand name for Sibelco’s natural barytes.
Benefits:
- UV resistance and weatherability: due to its inertness, baryte supports good UV and weatherability performance to exterior architectural coatings.
- Sandability: due to its fairly low hardness of 3 on Mohs scale, a coating with ATH is still relatively easy to sand, making it perfect for achieving a high gloss finish.
- Chemical resistance: due to its inert nature, baryte provides good chemical resistance compared to conventional fillers.
- Gloss control: due to the very fine particle size of the products, there is limited impact on the appearance of the coil coating.
- Increasing density: due to its high density, baryte is suitable for increasing the density of the powder. This is a very useful tool when the product is sold by weight.
